Hanna Kalmanovich-Cohen (Assistant Professor of Management, Oakland University) had a big problem: in her words, it was “lack of student engagement.” And she was skeptical of Breakout Learning at first.
”When I first learned about Breakout Learning, I kind of assumed that it's really just used and applied for case studies. So at first I was like, okay, it's [a] great platform, but there is nothing that I can actually do with it.”
But when she got in touch with the team, her perspective changed completely. ”I realized that it can be highly customizable. And what we [ended] up doing is creating actually weekly discussions, for my students based on the topics that we have covered in my course. So I think it was really a collaboration between me and the Breakout Learning team to really create something very unique for my course.”
The result? She solved her engagement problem. After engaging in small-group discussions on Breakout Learning’s platform, students saw their AI-powered engagement metrics, and were motivated to perform better. And perform better they did. Hanna says “it's really been very transformational for my students.”
